for producers

The Intimacy Coordinator Registry provides a list of Intimacy Coordinators (ICs) working in the screen industry in the UK and Ireland who have a certain level of experience. This is designed to promote high safety standards and competence that the industry can rely upon.

The Registry is administered, supported, and hosted by Bectu. It is in collaboration with the British Film Institute (BFI), and additional industry bodies – such as Channel 4 - have acknowledged the benefits of the Registry in support of clarity and competence for hirers looking to understand the scope of foundation skills that ICs bring to a production.

How to use the Bectu IC Registry

The Registry is intended for use by productions seeking an Intimacy Coordinator. Productions should still go through appropriate hiring processes: not every IC is the right IC for every job. Inclusion on the Registry does not guarantee the IC’s working practice will match with the director’s or actors’ or that the IC has experience on all types of intimate content. Productions should discuss the bespoke needs of the project and the approach of the creatives involved.

ICs who aren’t included on the Registry may be waiting for an upcoming application window or in a process of training or accumulating their pre-requisite days on set. Productions should speak to them about where they are in their IC journey at the point of hiring and use the terms of the Registry as a framework for these discussions. These ICs may still be the right professionals for a project.

Please note that the IC Registry is for Intimacy Coordinators (for recorded media) and not Intimacy Directors (for live performance). ICs on the Registry may not have any experience working in theatre.

The latest Registry list of ICs is viewable here (Launching October 2024).

What experience do ICs need to have to join the Registry?

A comprehensive list can be found on the Explainer Document here, but some central elements of the Registry criteria are listed below. The IC must have:

  • Worked as the Intimacy Coordinator for at least 25 shoot days on set, on at least 5 Productions, for at least 1 year.

  • Undergone Intimacy-specific training.

  • Worked and/or trained in an adjacent role with an understanding of movement for at least 3 years prior to becoming an IC.

  • Completed a range of certified trainings, e.g. Adult Mental Health First Aid, Sexual Harassment, Bystander Intervention, Anti-Racism.

  • Declared their understanding of some central facets of the role, e.g. modesty garments, Closed Set protocols, and relevant documentation.

Level 1 and Level 2

Level 1 ICs have met the criteria of competencies and skills to be on the Registry.

Level 2 ICs, in addition, have:

  • Completed at least 75 days of professional work as an IC on a shoot day (instead of 25 days)

  • Worked as an Intimacy Coordinator for at least 2 years

  • Worked as the leading Intimacy Coordinator (active head of department overseeing all intimacy responsibilities) on at least 3 productions that are at least Band 2 Television and/or Feature Films (budget £1m-£5m).

  • This additional list is for use by the industry to identify ICs with a higher level of experience, for work on particularly large-scale, complex or episodic productions, and/or on productions with notably high-risk, high-intensity content.

The IC Registry will continue to evolve and producers should continue to keep up-to-date about latest developments here on the Bectu Intimacy Coordinator website.
